The second prototype used finer mesh compared to the former so that it can map out more precise coordinates of the fingers. The technology was meant to offer a real-world feel of virtual objects, essentially recreating how humans use their fingers to pick up objects and manipulate them. In 1982, Nimish Mehta at the University of Toronto worked on a touch tablet device that used a camera behind frosted glass to detect the shadows and dark spots created on the screen when it was touched.
A few years earlier Corning had shown Jobs the company’s glass technology and he now insisted that, when the iPhone went on the market just five months later in June 2007, it had to have a glass screen. Using a simple and inexpensive method physicists are producing hybrid electrodes, the building blocks of touchscreen technology, from silver nanowires and graphene. Up until 1999, phone displays were extremely frills-free, usually a very small mono LCD screen primarily just displaying the number calling or being called, along with signal strength and battery level – if you were lucky. The new Nokia 3210 took its lead from the PDAs of the time and introduced us to a more useful screen, simple games, MMS and the first vibrating ringer. The unprecedented popularity of the 3210 would truly open the door for full-featured smartphones in the years to come. At the time only one in 100 people had mobile phones and the first SMS text message had been sent two years before. The science behind the displays is pretty neat, even though they are one of the simplest forms of display they are still surprisingly complex as shown in the following video. Who knows, even the existence of this 2006 video might help patent lawyers in years to come? Nokia, for one, doesn’t need to be too worried about lawsuits from touch-centric phone companies. As glass gets thinner, however, it becomes ever harder to set up a substantial difference in cooling rate between the core and the surface. In the 1960s researchers at Corning discovered a way of chemically strengthening glass by allowing smaller ions in the glass to be replaced with larger ions from a chemical bath. Thanks to this process of “ion exchange”, the surface of the glass becomes highly compressed, and therefore less prone to the introduction of damage and the application of stresses that could make it break.

This was in part due to the introduction of successful multi-touch on a screen, which opened the door for far more complex interactions with the screen, such as pinch and spread motions for changing the zoom, scrolling, swiping and rotating. PCAP touch screens are also more sensitive and thus more accurate, and with advances in technology, more scratch-resistant as they can be made of tougher tempered glass. This innovative new range of control electronics allows touch screens to be designed with ultra-narrow inactive borders and even facilitate the integration of contact-less peripheral systems such as NFC payment, and phone charging alongside the touch sensors. PDAs continued to evolve as standalone devices, getting incrementally more powerful processors, better screens – first with stylus-based touch, and later, the true touch screen technology that would also make its way into smartphones.

An ‘Active-Matrix’ is a type of ‘addressing scheme’ that is used in flat panel displays. With this style of addressing scheme each pixel is actively maintained by an attached capacitor or transistor that govern the pixel state while other pixels are being addressed. There is one disadvantage behind this however as the backlight in an LCD display is always turned on – this can lead to improper ‘Blacks’ on screen.
